It comes as no surprise that anytime Cancerslug comes to town, the house is packed full of the most die-hard fans the world has even known – proudly declaring their allegiance to The Slugcult, ready to dive headfirst into a night of thrashing and chaos. The show at Transplants Brewing Company in Palmdale, Ca on February 12th, 2024, was no exception.
The hardcore trio, hailing from Huntsville, Alabama, comprised of Alex Story on guitar and vocals, Cassie Baher on bass, and Jade V. Jones on drums, stormed the stage with a ferocity that defied human limitations. Despite facing notorious van breakdowns and other temporary setbacks, the band's unmatched dedication and sheer madness drove them through their nineteenth consecutive show, with eighteen more awaiting them on their relentless Slug Cult Rising Tour 2024.
They opened up the set with “Dick Solid”, an exceedingly heavy anthem with the kind of “fuck you” attitude that Story and his bandmates have exuded throughout the entirety of the bands 25-year career. An instant explosion of absolute chaos overcame the venue, prefacing a night of debauchery and bloodshed to come.
The set raged on with songs ranging from “If I Should Die Tonight” off their first album circa 1999, to “Women and Dope” circa 2004, to “D.I.L.L.I.G.A.F” (Do I Look Like I Give A Fuck) circa 2018, all the way to “Into The Burning Sky” circa 2020- and everything in between. Each song was a visceral assault on the senses, fueled by the band's unapologetic attitude and unrelenting passion.
As the set progressed, the crowd grew wilder, feeding off the infectious energy radiating from the stage, as the band seamlessly plugged along with a 21 song setlist, delivering an endless barrage of sickness and filth.
Beyond their raw talent and uncompromising sound, Cancerslug epitomizes the ethos of DIY punk rock, embodying a no-holds-barred approach to their craft. From self-promotion to merch sales, they personify the spirit of independence, eschewing gods and managers in favor of an unstoppable pursuit of their artistic vision and mayhem. They are undeniably one of the hardest working bands in the industry, and it’s been nothing short of an honor to capture them in their rawest form.
And while the tour may have reached its conclusion, the legacy of Cancerslug lives on, promising future tours and new music on the horizon. For those lucky enough to reside in Alabama, the band's 25th Anniversary Show at Mad Malts in their hometown of Huntsville on May 18th, 2024, promises a deranged performance not to be missed.
